Which photographer is right for you?

Choosing a photographer can be a difficult task. It usually boils down to wether you like their style, and your own budget.

I often hear photographers complaining they have had clients that think that they charge too much and I myself have enquiries that come back saying that I am a bit more expensive than what they would like to pay. Photography is very competitive and there are photographers to suit all kinds of budgets. However, in my opinion there are three types of photographers out there – you just need to find the one that is suited to your budget and requirements.

Photographer 1 – High Street Photographer

This is the photographer that has a shop on the high street. They have beautiful portraits in the window and professional helpful staff. You can often book a session which includes the shoot and a small photo print, for a very reasonable price. You go for a fun filled shoot where they take beautiful images of you and your family or your baby etc. You are then invited back for what is called a “viewing appointment”. This is where you select the images that you would like to buy, and where usually the “hard sell” begins. They don’t sell the digital images to you, only wall art, ready framed. Their products are not cheap, if they were, they wouldn’t have that beautiful bespoke studio, kitted out with all the latest equipment. High street property doesn’t come cheap and neither does all that equipment. The very helpful staff and assistants that made your shoot an enjoyable experience also need a good salary. The quality of the products are usually of a very good standard – hopefully you get what you pay for as you are likely to spend £1000 – £3000. This might be your choice of photographer if you want studio images and have a large budget.

Photographer 2. – The Newbie

This is the photographer that has unbelievably cheaper prices in comparison to all the rest you have received quotes from. They often offer all the images from your session on a cd included in the price. They are the new photographers – the ones just starting out that don’t have much experience yet. Photographers all have to start somewhere so they use a lower price to attract clients. They have probably not developed a style of their own yet, as they are still learning, and will often have a limited portfolio with no distinct style.
If your budget is tight and you just want some photos and are not too bothered with the style or the quality of the images, this is the photographer for you. The budget for this photographer is £50 – £150 or less – you get what you pay for.

Photographer 3. – Relationship Builder

This is the photographer that might come out to your home or may have a purpose built studio in their home or garden. They probably offer packages that may also include digital files, or those that can be purchased afterwards. They are up front about all their costs and initially they seem slightly more expensive. They may have been recommended by a friend, because this photographer prides herself/himself on building relationships with clients by recommendation.  Usually the cliernt will book again for another photoshoot. There is no hard sell on products after the shoot. This photographer is constantly evolving, improving techniques and goes for regular training, to stay on top of new trends, software and equipment. This photographer is likely to have a strong portfolio with a distinct style. The budget for this photographer is £250 – £500.
